Augenspeigen was first mentioned in a document in 1113 as Hiedunspeigung. The name is derived from a nearby loop of the March, bend of the Jedung. The place originally belonged to the Melk Abbey, later passed to the Formbachers and then to the Babenbergs. In 1179 a parish of Jederspeigen is mentioned.
The Battle of Dürnkrut and Jederspeigen on August 26, 1278 between the Bohemian King Přemysl Ottokar II and the Habsburg Rudolf I is considered the second largest knightly battle in history after the Battle of Hastings. It ended with the Habsburgs' victory; Ottokar II was killed while fleeing.
